Personal Investigation - Accessibility in Design

Statement of Intent

Design is ever more important in this saturated world, but if a quarter of the world struggles to see important notices in the form of posters and signs, then their lives will be affected in massive ways. For example, street signs are made to convey vital information about road layout to those who are unfamiliar with the area. Without them, the roads would descend into a stream of uncontrollable and dangerous drivers. This premise extends to traditional art as well. Many visually impaired people are unable to enjoy more traditional paintings, and even mediums that could be enjoyed tactilely, such as statues, they are often barred from experiencing due to worries of damaging the art. I personally suffer from myelinated optical nerve fibres, a condition that results in me having little to no depth perception This, along with Deuteranopia a form of red/green colour blindness, has affected my life massively, from struggling to play catch, to being unable to play contact sports and even be stopped from working in certain jobs, such as being a pilot. Whilst this never phased me, millions of others endure far worse than what I have to experience, and I always wondered how this has affected them.

Throughout this project, I will be exploring how designs can be made more accessible, particularly for those with sight loss, and exploring how those with visual impairment view and interpret these designs.

About the website

I have created this entire website by myself. To help navigate between the pages, you can either use the sidebar, or the buttons at the end of every page. Some images are shown in a special box with a slider. This allows you to compare between a normal version, and one with a colour blindness filter added. The filter is not 100% accurate, but it helps to give a good idea to what I see.
